NEW FOREST & SOLENT AREA

For members in Dorset, Hampshire & Wiltshire

Area Rep: James Williams

My main Land Rover is a 1966 Land Rover Series 2A 109”, 2.25 petrol. I bought this from eBay back in 2008 for the grand sum of £100 from a farm in Surrey. It spent its former life working on many diary farms in Suffolk.  When ‘Harriet’ came to me she needed restoration. Since then, we have been on many adventures on and off the road. She has travelled to Land Rover rallies all over Europe, and in 2014 myself and some friends took our Series 2A’s to the Arctic Circle via Norway. She has travelled far and wide on many green lane trips & camping weekends, and has recently completed a tour of Southern Ireland. To me, she is a road trip & exploration vehicle and is there to be used.

My other Land Rover is a 1979 Series 3 Lightweight, which I mainly use for greenlaning and driving when I am servicing the 109”.

Best Land Rover experience: Too many to list! It probably must be the adventure & camaraderie with fellow club members when exploring new green lanes far from home and finally getting to that local pub in time for dinner.

Best advice if buying a leaf sprung Land Rover: Always make sure the chassis & bulkhead are as solid as possible. Everything else is easy to repair or replace. Do not be afraid to crawl underneath and have a poke with a screwdriver or tap with a hammer to prove that it is solid.

Owning a classic Land Rover is a way of life. Someone once told me. You do not break down in old cars, you just get inconvenienced.

Also, one man’s rust is another man’s light corrosion.

Thursday afternoon
Arrive, relax, chill out, perhaps sample some home brew.

Friday evening
Members are invited to bring along a cake/savoury/nibble of their choice as a contribution towards the buffet. Ideally something a bit different to ensure we don't get too much of the same. Savouries/sandwiches/pies & healthy stuff are also welcome! Tea will be provided. Buffet commences at 18:00 in the marquee.

Campfire
If some of you could bring some wood that would be great. Like last year if everybody brings a few logs and or pallets etc then it helps greatly.
The more wood the better!

Greenlaning
Some of the lanes can be a bit scratchy because of the time of year.

Greenlaning  Groups
This year we are placing the emphasis of navigation more on you. It is desirable but not essential that you bring a copy of OS Explorer Map 118 with you. Groups of no more than 5 will be heading off at separate time intervals on the Saturday morning from 09:00. We welcome Navigators and Team Leaders to come forward.

Greenlaning  Restrictions
Quite a few lanes have height restrictions due to trees. Because of this any vehicle with a roof rack will not be suitable. I can advise you which lanes to avoid should this be a problem.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your battery is secure prior to greenlaning. Bits of the route are bumpy.

Greenlaning  Requirements
It is absolutely paramount that your four wheel drive system and low range gearbox are functional.  We have some fairly interesting hills to climb and descend.

Greenlaning  Navigation
It is desirable but not essential that you bring a copy of OS Explorer Map 118 with you.
I will have a marked up copy of OS MAP 118 with me for those who wish to take a copy of the route.
I have also mapped out the route on Ordnance Survey Getamap which means a week before the event I will be able to send an exported GPX file of the route for those of you who wish to upload it to your smartphone/GPS device.

Greenlaning  Additional Notes
Please note:  Because of the time of year some of these greenlanes will be overgrown.  Your Land Rover will experience scratching from foliage. I can advise you which lanes to avoid should this be a problem.

The 2023 booking form can be emailed to you. If you are interested in coming along then please contact me ASAP so I can send it across. The sooner I have an idea of numbers the better.
